When Riaan and Sonja van Jaarsveld said their I do’s on a beautiful beach, it was proof that all you need for a romantic wedding is love and each other.
Riaan proposed to me about 10 years ago. I was asleep and he slid the ring onto my finger. When I woke up, I saw it and was like, ‘what is this?’ He asked me, and I said Yes.
Tell us about the theme.
My theme was a ‘beach theme’. We were married at Glencairn Rocks, a beautiful beach in False Bay. We decided to get married there because it was a small, intimate wedding and we just love going to the beach. I made the décor myself using shells, little boards and candles, and had great fun making the boards. The venue was a huge homestead in Noordhoek – a beautiful garden completed the picture and we felt like we were in a fairy-tale forest. Beautiful green trees and lovely flowers surrounded us. There were horses and chickens – much to our daughter’s delight. A feeling of warmth filled us and the love of friends and family was all we needed to make our day special.
And the menu?
Our menu was easy – we catered for just 10 people. We had a traditional ‘braaivleis’ with roasted vegetables and a ‘paptert’—everyone enjoyed it very much.
Highlight of the day?
The intimacy of having my family all gathered to celebrate our new lives. It was a deeply emotional experience for me.
Any special advice?
Just go with the flow and what will be, will be. Be yourself and don’t sweat the small stuff.
