It’s all very well having a tipple while you consider your décor options (with your girlfriends, of course), but when it comes to using the dear old bottle as decor itself, you might be inclined to fob it off as student stuff. Not so fast, bride-to-be! The wine bottle – hand-in-hand with the hot trends of eco-friendly, DIY and upstyled – is making a comeback and it’s certainly worth a second glance.
Start simple: with the base removed and candles inside, bottles can serve as hurricane lamps on walkways, stairways or on tables. Getting a little more adventurous, hang them from a branch or in a frame, pop a flower in each and you have a romantic backdrop.
As table décor, the options are endless: wrap in ribbon or twine and combine with other vases or bottles, candles and flowers for stunning centrepieces, or spray paint in glistening silver or white, fill with flowers and string with fairy lights for something totally spectacular. For a rustic look, try blackboard paint and chalk in the table numbers, or wrap in beads for a pop of colour.
When it comes to the tipple itself, what about printing your own special edition labels and serving at your function, or giving each guest a special edition bottle to take home as a memento? For other wedding favours, fill empties with vinegar, jelly beans or bubble bath – or cut in half and fill with chocolates, almonds, biscuits or tiny seedlings which your guests can plant out later.
