Sacha and Kathryn Matulovich

How did your groom propose?

We were on holiday with our families in a small town called Boggomsbaai on the Garden Route. Sacha and I headed down to the beach to watch the sunset. He handed me a world map and asked me to read aloud what he had written on it. It was The Adventures of Sach and Kath, a love story that documented all the travelling, excitement, drama and cliffhangers that had filled our three years together. The story built up to Boggomsbaai, where the last line was his proposal. I was so excited! I cried, said yes and he put an exquisite engagement ring on my finger. We kissed, laughed, talked… and rushed back to the house to announce “we’re getting married!” to our families! It was the most incredible day.

Tell us about the theme of your wedding day.

We wanted the occasion to encompass the adventure, romance and great times we had spent together. Red Ivory Lodge is designed to flaunt the beauty of its surroundings and needed little decor to extend its splendour. We had gorgeous flowers, a lot of crystal and glassware, candles, lighting and incredible music to create an elegant but festive vibe at the tables while filling the environment with colour and texture.

And the menu?

The head chef at Red Ivory prepared an exquisite à la carte selection. For starters, our guests had Parma ham tiered with shortcrust pastry and cream cheese, drizzled with balsamic and olive oil; or tempura prawns served on a bed of finely cut cucumber, summer fruits and drizzled with lemon juice. The main course comprised slow-roasted Karoo lamb with a rosemary and lavender infusion or Scottish salmon pan-fried in butter, served with orange and butter sauce. For dessert, guests tucked into decadent wedding cupcakes made by the talented team at Annica’s Designer Cakes, and sweetie bar treats.

What was the highlight of the day?

There are so many moments that are unforgettable: walking down the aisle on my dad’s arm to a beautiful remake of the Beatles’ I Want to Hold Your Hand and my eyes locking with Sacha’s; saying our own vows; entering the reception to a room full of love and happiness; Sacha’s speech that had everyone in laughter and in tears; stealing a moment together in the middle of the reception to take it all in; our first dance to Live’s I Want to Dance With You; and partying it up on the dance floor till the early hours of the morning… Our bands definitely rocked the party!

Any advice for brides planning their special day?

Love it all, make it your own, don’t stress and have fun right from the engagement to when you are handing out your last thank-you card. Be inspired by everyone and everything – it’s all about expressing the love you feel and in that sense the day will be perfect no matter what.
