How did your groom propose?
My wonderful Guy whisked me off to Sun City for a magical weekend. We had the most incredible time, starting off with a breathtaking zip line ride, then a trip to the crocodile park and the Valley of Waves. Guy was a little quiet throughout and was strangely possessive over his bag, but I was completely clueless. Later in the chalet Guy gave me a huge hug and started mumbling something along the lines of “I’ve had such an amazing day with you and I’d like to make sure that we keep having days like this for the rest of our lives”. Then he was down on one knee! Neither of us can actually remember what happened after as we were so overwhelmed with emotion. But somehow he popped (mumbled) the question – to which I replied, “Of course!”
Tell us about the theme of your wedding.
We had our wedding at Shepstone Gardens, a true gem in the heart of Johannesburg. It was the first venue we saw and we were so mesmerised that we didn’t even look at any others. The theme for our wedding was “scientific” as we met studying genetics at university (Guy designed my engagement ring to look like a DNA helix). We incorporated scientific elements and quirks into our stationery and decor. Our flowers were submerged in long cylindrical vases for a sleek, modern feel. We had a “Periodic Table of Seating” for the guests and the favours were “scrolls” (lotto tickets) in test tubes. During our ceremony we also conducted an experiment instead of the traditional candle lighting ceremony, whereby we mixed two colourless liquids to form a magnificent magenta-hued liquid.
And the menu?
The food was catered by Taste Explosion and they did a superb job! Canapés consisted of mini chicken kebabs with a lime aioli, crumbed halloumi with a port and berry dip and pastry cups with Gorgonzola, Parma ham and rocket. Our trio of starters was courgette and halloumi fritters; salmon, roast butternut and beetroot salad; and grilled brinjal served with sundried tomato and feta. Main course was a choice between ricotta- and sage-filled chicken breasts and beef fillet rolled in Moroccan spices and served with a potato tower and crunchy vegetables. Dessert included heavenly rolled pavlova with strawberries and delightful brownies, carrot cake, fresh fruit and a cheese and cracker selection.
What was the highlight of the day?
The day was incredible from start to finish and feels like a dream when I think back to it. Two moments were unforgettable, though: walking down the aisle to my husband, both of us overwhelmed with emotion; and my husband’s speech in the evening – he spoke so beautifully and with so much love that there wasn’t a dry eye in the room!
Any special advice for brides to be?
Try to include your groom in all the planning. My husband and I had so much fun doing things together – food tasting, decor displays – that it really brought us together and gave us the sense that it was “our big day” rather than “my big day”. Also, don’t fret the small stuff – you’re so overwhelmed on the day that you’ll hardly notice the shade of the serviettes.
